Delicious Organic Gluten-Free Lamb & Rosemary Sausages

March 30, 2007 at 8:44 pm | In Allergy Related, Interesting Products | 1 Comment

This week I ordered some gluten-free lamb & rosemary sausages from the Abel & Cole website. I didn’t buy them with my son in mind, more to put in the freezer for when I need them as an easy meal for my husband.

When they came, I read the label – as I always do! – to see what was in them. To my delight and surprise, I realised that they would be suitable to give to my son as they didn’t contain anything which he couldn’t have. The listed ingredients were simply lamb, cooked brown rice, water, potato starch, seasoning, rosemary & garlic powder.

So instead of putting them in the freezer, I decided to make them for dinner! I served them up with homemade potato wedges and veggies.

And my son loved them!

Reduce your “allergy-friendly shopping” bill by growing your own!!

March 28, 2007 at 1:26 pm | In Useful tips | Leave a Comment

I’m feeling very inspired this year to grow some of my own vegetables. I have to admit that I’m probably not a natural gardener (!!) but from what I’ve read you can pick veggies that are really easy to grow.

Food shopping for allergic little ones can end up being quite expensive especially if you are buying lots of fresh organic produce. So by growing your own, you can help to reduce your shopping bill whilst also having some fun - my little one loves messy play out in the garden!

I’ve found this site www.organicgardening.org.uk which seems to have some great information about organic gardening. And this afternoon I’m off to the library to see if I can get a good beginners book about growing easy veg. I’ll have to keep you updated as to how I get on!!

Oh and before I sign off, just to let you know it’s Welly Week from 21-28th April. Welly Week is organised by Garden Organic to raise funds to help educate and inspire people about organic gardening, farming and food for a sustainable future. For more info visit www.organicgardening.org.uk.

Are soapnuts nuts?

March 26, 2007 at 6:01 pm | In Interesting Products | Leave a Comment

I’ve been thinking about buying some soapnuts for my laundry for ages but wasn’t quite sure about the nut bit!!

So today I looked on a couple of sites to see if there was anything about people with nut allergies not using them, but couldn’t find anything. In fact, several sites recommended them for people with sensitive skin, eczema and allergies! So I was most confused about the nut aspect.

I decided to ask a fellow work-at-home mum who sells them (www.summernaturals.co.uk)  if she could clarify. She told me that they are actually a berry and not a nut at all!

Doing a bit more research, I then came across the Janey Lee Grace website (www.janeyleegrace.co.uk) where she states “They’re NOT actually nuts. They are a berry. They are not part of the nut family and won’t cause any nut allergy.”

So feeling a bit happier about the whole thing, I decided to order some from Summer Naturals along with a few other “traditional” cleaning bits including white wine vinegar and borax.

 Spring clean here I come!!

Rocks Organic Cordials – delicious!

March 25, 2007 at 1:29 pm | In Interesting Products | 2 Comments

I’ve been buying the Rocks Organic Cordials for a while now and they are delicious!! We particularly like the Orange and Lemon ones and they are even tastier when made up with sparkling water!

Our son only drinks water and his special formula milk. And of course it depends on the allergy, but I know they can be great for children on various restricted diets. They don’t contain any nasties and are made from wholly organic ingredients.

If you fancy checking them out, have a look at their website www.rocksorganic.com.

Chocolate-Free Easter Treats

March 24, 2007 at 8:29 pm | In Useful tips | 1 Comment

I came across a great article today titled “Chocolate-Free Easter Treats” on the eparenting website (ww.eparenting.co.uk).  It seems that due to concerns about increasing child obesity, a number of parents are looking for chocolate-free easter treats this year – not just those parents with allergic babies and toddlers!

The article recommends a free gift advice service offered by www.idealpresent.co.uk. It lists a number of great alternative gift suggestions for this Easter. I went on to the site and searched for my own list…and I must admit I’m quite tempted by some of the ideas! The service is free so why not have a look!

Highlighting Christopher’s Fund

March 23, 2007 at 1:04 pm | In Worthy causes | Leave a Comment

Christopher’s Fund (www.christophersfund.org.uk) was set up by Sarah Palk in memory of her son Christopher who sadly died from a brain tumour when he was just four years old.

Sarah says “As most families who lose loved ones, we wanted to keep his memory alive and what better way to do it than to raise money to help and support others. So far we have raised over £40,000 to support charities close to our heart. “

The main charity that the fund supports is Edward’s Trust who provide accommodation for families of sick children who are being treated in Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

They also support The Brain Tumour Research Fund at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and CCLG.

Foods Standards Agency launches allergy allerts

March 22, 2007 at 4:39 pm | In In the news | Leave a Comment

The Foods Standards Agency is today launching its free Allergy SMS Text Message Service and allergy email alerts.

According to their website (www.food.gov.uk), these will alert people with a food allergy, who have signed up to the services, with an immediate notification that a product may be of risk to them.

The new alerts have been devised in response to the number of product withdrawals and recalls the Agency manages. On average, the Agency issues advice relevant to people with allergies once a week. Each year, there are between five and 15 fatalities associated with food allergies.

To sign up to this free SMS service, simply send the text message ‘START ALLERGY’ to 62372. Texting ‘STOP ALLERGY’ unsubscribes you. This initial text will be charged at your network provider’s rate. You can also sign up specifically for email messages about allergy alerts.
