Plum Baby have recently launched baby organic fromage frais.

Now obviously these aren’t for those little ones on a diary-free diet but thought I’d mention here as

a) we’ve tried them and they were a big hit and

b) because, so far, they are the only organic baby dairy products we’ve found that don’t contain lemon juice.

All things citrus seem to make my daughters excema worse so we are avoiding it at the moment. But, as with lots of things, when you start looking at labels citrus seems to be in more products that you initially think! Yoghurt and fromage frais included!

I must add though that only two out of the three of the flavours are lemon-free (but that just means that I got to try them out too!!). And talking of flavours, they’ve got some quite unusual combos – Strawberry & Chamomile (lemon free), Raspberry & Rosehip (lemon free), and Peach & Sweet Fennel (not lemon free).

LEAP Study on the BBC today

May 3, 2007 at 9:41 pm | In Allergy Related, Eczema, In the news | Leave a Comment

I was surprised this morning when the phone rang at around 7.30am. My little boy is an early riser so I’d already been up for over an hour but I don’t usually have any early morning callers.

Anyway, it was my Mum to say that Professor Gideon Lack was being interviewed on the BBC so I turned on the TV to tune it.  He was being interviewed about the rise in peanut allergies and the LEAP study that he and his colleagues are currently conducting.

I’ve already mentioned the LEAP study in my blog. I think that it’s a really interesting  study and feel that it’s a shame that we just missed out with Taran. We first heard about it last year at The Allergy Show by which time Taran was already 11 months old. And for the study the babies need to be between 4 and 11 months old.

There’s an interesting article and clip on the BBC and for more info on the LEAP study visit www.leapstudy.co.uk

Allergic March…will it apply?

April 18, 2007 at 5:47 pm | In Allergy Related, Eczema, General: Day-to-day, In the news | Leave a Comment

Ever since I’ve been reading up on allergies, I’ve frequently come across the term “allergic march”. To me, allergic march refers to how babies that start off suffering from eczema often go on to develop other atopic conditions such as asthma and hayfever.

Today, I had a follow-up appointment for my asthma at my local hospital. The fact that I suffer from both asthma and hayfever does make me worry that Taran will also develop these two conditions. On a day-to-day basis, my asthma is generally well controlled although it does sometimes get triggered if I’m doing sport or I develop a cold. However, the principal trigger and the main cause for my trips to A&E is food colourings, in particular, yellows and reds. Thankfully, at present Taran shows no signs of developing asthma so fingers crossed!

Talking of asthma and hayfever, apparently this summer could be the worst on record for allergies – oh joy! This is due to predicted high temperatures resulting in higher pollution and pollen levels. More info can be found on the Asthma UK’s website at www.asthma.org.uk.

Eczema & Sunscreen

April 16, 2007 at 11:19 am | In Eczema | Leave a Comment

With all this beautiful weather we’ve been having, the need for sunscreens has come early this year.

Since Taran has been on his restricted diet, his eczema has all but cleared. Having said that, I’m still very careful about what I put on his skin, in his bath etc and this obviously applies to sunscreen.

Last summer, when I was looking into sunscreens, I came across a really useful document on the Eczema Society website that outlined the ingredients in the most common sunscreens and what to look out for.

I don’t know if they will be updating it for this year, but in the meantime it does make for an interesting read – http://www.eczema.org/sunscreen%20ingredients%20list%2006.pdf.
