British Food Fortnight
September 24, 2007 at 7:20 pm | In General: Day-to-day, In the news | Leave a CommentWhilst reading the newspaper on Saturday, I noticed a mention of British Food Fortnight which is running from 22 September to 7 October.
As I’m what’s known as a ”label checker”, I do tend to check to see where something has been grown / produced before buying it. But admittedly in the past, knowing this information hasn’t generally put me off buying it. Now however I am more aware of envirnomental issues concerning air freight etc and so do tend to buy more in season produce – this is made easier by the fact that I get the majority of my fruit and veg from an organic box delivery scheme!
Anyway, I would recommend checking out the British Food Fortnight website as it does have lots of really useful information.
Bobotie Recipe (Egg Free)
August 23, 2007 at 1:51 pm | In Eating In, General: Day-to-day | Leave a CommentWhat is Bobotie? Well, it is a South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. And my Mum recently gave me a copy of an old recipe for Bobotie that she was given several years ago by a South African friend.
So I decided to make it without the egg topping and serve it with rice instead. It was quick and easy to make and a delicious alternative to chilli con carne.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp cooking oil
½ tbsp dairy-free spread
500 g mince meat (either lamb, beef or a combination of the two)
2 onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 cup of grated carrot or apple
2 tsp curry powder
1 tsp coriander
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp dried (or 1 tbsp fresh) mixed herbs
1 tsp turmeric
½ tsp cinnamon
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Method:
1. Stir fry the mince in the oil and the dairy-free spread until loose and crumbly, using a fork.
2. Add the chopped onion and stir fry until cooked. Add the garlic, carrot or apple and all the spices. Continue to cook for 10 minutes on a low heat to allow the flavours to develop.
3. Serve with rice.
Beetroot, Carrot & Potato Cakes
August 3, 2007 at 1:04 pm | In Eating In, General: Day-to-day | Leave a CommentIn last week’s Abel & Cole newsletter, there was a great recipe for beetroot, carrot & potato cakes.
The original recipe contains egg but I simply missed that out and just used the rest of the ingredients. And they turned out lovely. As the recipe involves grated beetroot and carrot and I think that that creates enough moisture to bind them together without needing the egg.
If you are interested in giving them a try, here’s the link to A&C’s recipe page – simply click on beetroot and you’ll find the recipe listed – http://www.abelandcole.co.uk/Default.aspx?tab=Recipes
Happy 2nd Birthday Taran!
July 4, 2007 at 3:10 pm | In General: Day-to-day | Leave a CommentToday is Taran 2nd birthday. We’ve been busy meeting up with friends to celebrate plus he is having a party on Saturday.
A while back, I promised to post pictures of his allergy-free birthday cake on this blog. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten but I’m doing the cake for his party so it won’t be until the weekend.
Also apologies for the lack of posts in recent weeks. It’s the same old excuse of being really busy plus fitting in a family holiday. But watch this space, because I’m back to posting!!
Last Baby Signing Class – End of an Era!!!
May 31, 2007 at 12:19 pm | In General: Day-to-day, Interesting Products | Leave a CommentAll of Taran’s usual classes and groups aren’t running this week due to it being half-term. However, we are very sad because we won’t be continuing with baby signing when they all start up again next week.
I first enrolled Taran in a baby signing class when he was just 4 months old. Obviously, it was more for me than him as it was a chance to get out of the house and meet some other mum’s. We attended our local TinyTalk class and the teacher Laura is fantastic.
We loved going to her classes as they have a lovely atmosphere and are the right combination of singing and signing, singing with musical instruments and then free play at the end when all the parents have a coffee and a natter.
But sadly, after going for 18 months, the time has come to move on to other things. Taran is getting too old for the class and being an active little one he was beginning to get a bit too boistrous around all the tiny new babies.
He still uses several of the signs although his speech is now starting to develop fairly quickly. Whenever he is hungry, he uses the sign for ”eat” and he also loves doing all the animals signs - dog, cat, pig, horse…the list goes on.
For anyone interested in signing, I’ve found a great site called http://www.chelltune.co.uk which tells you all about the different signing methods and has some great signing products for sale. It’s definitely worth checking out.
But for us, it’s the end of an era and time to move onto another type of class.
