Plum Baby have recently launched baby organic fromage frais.

Now obviously these aren’t for those little ones on a diary-free diet but thought I’d mention here as

a) we’ve tried them and they were a big hit and

b) because, so far, they are the only organic baby dairy products we’ve found that don’t contain lemon juice.

All things citrus seem to make my daughters excema worse so we are avoiding it at the moment. But, as with lots of things, when you start looking at labels citrus seems to be in more products that you initially think! Yoghurt and fromage frais included!

I must add though that only two out of the three of the flavours are lemon-free (but that just means that I got to try them out too!!). And talking of flavours, they’ve got some quite unusual combos – Strawberry & Chamomile (lemon free), Raspberry & Rosehip (lemon free), and Peach & Sweet Fennel (not lemon free).

First of all, an apology for not posting for ages!! Life got a bit busy for a while and didn’t get a chance to keep up with any of the Feed me allergy free stuff.

But now I’m back, I wanted to quickly mention a website that I’ve just stumbled across – Pure Flavour. It looks a great site if you are following a wheat/gluten free and dairy free diet – especially the cakes which look delicious!! Unfortunately, no good for us though as they aren’t egg free.

Last Baby Signing Class – End of an Era!!!

May 31, 2007 at 12:19 pm | In General: Day-to-day, Interesting Products | Leave a Comment

All of Taran’s usual classes and groups aren’t running this week due to it being half-term. However, we are very sad because we won’t be continuing with baby signing when they all start up again next week.

I first enrolled Taran in a baby signing class when he was just 4 months old. Obviously, it was more for me than him as it was a chance to get out of the house and meet some other mum’s. We attended our local TinyTalk class and the teacher Laura is fantastic.

We loved going to her classes as they have a lovely atmosphere and are the right combination of singing and signing, singing with musical instruments and then free play at the end when all the parents have a coffee and a natter.

But sadly, after going for 18 months, the time has come to move on to other things. Taran is getting too old for the class and being an active little one he was beginning to get a bit too boistrous around all the tiny new babies.

He still uses several of the signs although his speech is now starting to develop fairly quickly.  Whenever he is hungry, he uses the sign for ”eat” and he also loves doing all the animals signs - dog, cat, pig, horse…the list goes on.

For anyone interested in signing, I’ve found a great site called http://www.chelltune.co.uk which tells you all about the different signing methods and has some great signing products for sale. It’s definitely worth checking out.

But for us, it’s the end of an era and time to move onto another type of class.

Fantastic range of organic baby clothing on www.Feedmeallergyfree.co.uk

I’ve just added a fantastic range of organic baby clothing, including day playsuits and rompers, to www.Feedmeallergyfree.co.uk. I hope that visitors to my site will also think they look gorgeous!

Why do I feel they fit in with my allergy site? Well, when my son was a baby and before his allergies were under control, he suffered quite badly from eczema. Consequently, he spent a lot of time in baby suits and rompers as opposed to “proper” clothes as I thought they were more comfortable on his sensitive skin.

I often found it difficult to find suitable day rompers which didn’t make it look like he’d spent the whole day in his PJ’s! And I thought there must be other mothers in the same situation.

The range of baby clothing that I’ve decided to stock is certified organic by SKAL and AGRECO. SKAL is the inspection body for organic production in the Netherlands and they issue the EKO symbol which is used throughout Europe whilst AGRECO is the inspection body for organic production methods.

So why go organic? Organic cotton is produced entirely free of chemical pesticides and therefore without the risks that such chemicals pose to human health and the environment.

Personally, I like to buy organic clothing for my son. A baby’s skin is 5 times thinner than adult, allowing toxins to penetrate the skin much more easily. In addition, all the garments on the site are formaldehyde, heavy metals and other harmful additives.

So please do have a look at www.Feedmeallergyfree.co.uk.

Goats Milk Chocolate

May 1, 2007 at 12:27 pm | In Allergy Related, Eating In, Eating Out, Interesting Products | Leave a Comment

Last week, I received an email from Sarah Williams and she mentioned her company Billy Goat Stuff that makes chocolate from goats milk.

Sarah’s son is intolerant to cows milk and soya but he can have goats milk and this is how she came about making goats milk chocolate.

Personally, I’ve never tried Taran on goats milk as I know that children with cows milk allergy can often be allergic to goats milk due to the similarity in milk proteins.

However, in the name of reseach I decided to order some of Sarah’s chocolate to carry out a taste test myself. So I was very excited this morning when it got delivered with the morning post. I waited till my little boy went down for his afternoon nap, made a cup of hot water and sat down with a couple of chocolates. And I can genuinely say they were really delicious!

I’m somewhat of a chocoholic but I’m fairly picky about the quality of the chocolate I eat. In general, I tend to go for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content. The billy goat chocolate contains 40% cocoa and 20% goats milk. In addition, it also contains sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa beans and rice emulsifier.

If you or your little one can’t have cows milk or soya but can have goats milk then I would definitely recommend the Billy Goat Stuff Chocolate. For more info, go to www.billygoatstuff.co.uk.

Please note: if your child is intolerant / allergic to cows milk, please consult your GP or allergist before giving them goats milk.

Taran’s First Session in Childcare

April 13, 2007 at 1:04 pm | In Allergy Related, Childcare, Interesting Products | Leave a Comment

Taran had his first full session in the creche at my gym this morning and he had a super time!

When I say session, perhaps that’s a rather grand word for the hour that he spent there but for me that’s a great start.

As a SAHM, Taran usually spends all day with me. We are very socialable and go to lots of toddlers groups, meet up with friends etc but he is always with me. At the weekend, he does sometimes get looked after just by his Dad or grandparents but it has never been for more than a couple of hours.

So I decided that perhaps it was time for him to be a bit more independent and to spend a couple of hours a week away from me. For any parent, leaving your child can be difficult and for the parent of an allergic child it is even more difficult because there is always that “What if….?” in the back of your mind.

As I am a SAHM, I didn’t want to put him into nursery and so decided to try the creche at my gym which is only available to members. I decided that two 1 hour slots a week would be sufficient and in that way could be something he looks forward to.

I don’t think the word creche properly describes the great childcare and professional staff  provided by this facility.  The creche is in fact part of a full day-care nursery and is therefore Ofsted regulated and follows thorough procedures and rules.

Prior to Taran attending, I filled in a special requirements form detailing all about his allergies, emergency treatment and contact details. And every time, I drop him off I have to write his name & allergies on the signing-in sheet and also tell the staff in person. I also need to leave his medication in a clearly marked bag.

In preparation for him going to the creche, last week I bought an excellent “school bag” for his medication from a company called Yellow Cross (www.yellowcross.co.uk). The bag is excellent, just the right size and enables you to clearly mark the child’s name, allergies and treatment.

Having said all that, he will only attend in the morning and never stay over lunchtime. Plus as the creche is a facility provided by the gym, I have to remain on the premises at all times.

So this morning I spent the hour in their lovely restaurant area and enjoyed a latte whilst reading the newspaper - what bliss!
